Data Lineage
Explore the journey of your data with Dawiso's Diagrams app which stores all your data lineages! Create visual representations of your data flow to trace data origins and ensure data quality and compliance.
About this lesson
Lineage is the record of where a figure came from: which source systems fed it, what transformed it on the way, and which reports depend on it now. It answers the two questions that otherwise consume days. Backwards, when a number looks wrong, it shows what upstream to check instead of guessing. Forwards, before anyone changes a column, it shows exactly what will break. Under regimes such as GDPR and BCBS 239 it is also the evidence that you can demonstrate where a reported figure originated.
Who it is for. Data engineers, analysts and compliance teams tracing data end to end.
Points to cover
- What the Diagrams app is and how to use it
- Create a data lineage to visualize a data flow
- Why lineage matters for quality and compliance
- How to read and analyze a lineage diagram
- Use lineage for impact analysis before a change
What you will be able to do
- Create a lineage diagram that represents a real data flow
- Read a diagram to trace a figure back to its source systems
- Run an impact analysis to see what a proposed change would affect
